Press releace - after fairOctober 16th saw the conclusion of TRAKO 2009, the 8th International Railway Fair in Gdańsk, Poland. This largest Polish and second largest European rail industry meeting gathered 420 exhibitors from 17 countries. This year, the Organiser registered a record-breaking number of trade visitors. TRAKO 2009 had a football of 9,200 visitors from 30 countries. The show’s latest edition confirmed that TRAKO is the perfect opportunity to promote rail transport in its broadest sense, to present the latest technologies and hold meetings within the industry. TRAKO enjoyed the honorary patronage of Poland’s Minister of the Infrastructure Cezary Grabarczyk. The largest contingent of international guests at this year’s TRAKO came from Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France and the United Kingdom. Next to individual exhibition stands, the French, Czechs and Britons presented their products in national pavilions. Trako 2009 included a remarkably extensive programme of accompanying events, including conferences, seminars and business meetings. Two events took place the day before the exhibition: the 3rd International Seminar on the Interoperability of the 1435/1520 Railway Systems organised by the SIRTS Polish Association for Interoperability and Development of Rail Transport and the 2nd Technical Seminar, which originated in partnership with the IGKM Polish Chamber of Urban Transport. The latter’s thematic sessions addressed the issues of The Tram as a Modern Means of Public Transport and Preparing Tram Systems for Euro 2012. The debate which accompanied the opening ceremony was TRAKO’s key media event. It gathered experts, politicians and practitioners representing international organisations and railway companies, EU institutions and representatives of the local government. This year’s participants included: Juliusz Engelhardt – Undersecretary of State at Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure Andrzej Wach - President of the Board, PKP SA Mieczysław Struk – Marshal of the Pomeranian (Pomorskie) Region Matthias Woitok – European Investment Bank Johannes Ludewig – Executive Director, CER Mauro Moretti – President, FS Italian State Railways / President, CER Stefan Hlinka – President, ®SR Slovakian Railways This year’s debate focused on the most important current problem: the global economic and financial crisis and its impact on the railways. This was reflected in the title of the debate: Railway Investments as a Way to Mitigate the Consequences of the Economic Crisis. Organised by the Railway Market Forum, the debate on The Future of Regional Rail in Poland generated a lot of interest among the public. The main issues included organisation, financing and investments. The debate's participants included the presidents of: PKP Przewozy Regionalne Tomasz Moraczewski, PKP Intercity Krzysztof Celiński, Koleje Dolnośląskie Genowefa Ładniak, Arriva PCC Fabien Courtellemont, WKD Warsaw Commuter Rail Grzegorz Dymecki, PKP SKM Trójmiasto Rapid Urban Rail Maciej Lignowski, SKM Rapid Urban Rail Leszek Walczak, senior expert at ZDG TOR and former Minister of Transport Tadeusz Syryjczyk, and Deputy Marshal of Pomorskie Region Mieczysław Struk. Day 2 saw the ERTMS Debate organised by SIRTS and PKP PLK, which was fully open to the general public. The meeting was dedicated to showing the new environment for implementing ERTMS in the light of changes in EU law. The debate’s agenda included addresses from the European Railway Agency responsible for supervision over ERTMS and from the UNIFE Union of the European Railway Industries. The large group of trade visitors who represented Polish and European institutions at the 2009 edition of TRAKO included the representatives of the diplomatic corps with the Ambassador of the Czech Republic His Excellency Jan Sechter and the Ambassador of Canada His Excellency Daniel Costello. Trako is also an excellent opportunity to present what’s new in the market. This year we recorded several debuts. The leading rail transport companies presented their best vehicles which ensure passenger comfort and safety. The world preview of the low floor TRAMINO tram from Solaris Bus&Coach was an unquestionable attraction of this year's Fair. Tramino has a capacity of 229 passengers, including 47 permanent seats and 20 folding seats. There will be cameras both in the passenger section and in front of the tram. Utterly new is the heating and air-conditioning system in the passenger space. For the first time Trako featured a presentation of a no-compartment railcar from the FPS Rail Vehicle Factory, Poznań, developed for PKP Intercity, with a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The cars feature a 2+1 comfort seat arrangement and increased comfort of the pneumatic passageways between cars. Alstom Ferroviaria presented the models of their cutting edge Pendolino train sets, which the company wishes to offer to PKP Intercity during the forthcoming tender for the purchase of 20 high-speed train sets. Tabor Szynowy Opole held a presentation of a 602S low-loader car for intermodal transport. The low-loader car with a drive-through freight space is dedicated to trucks with semitrailers or containers on lowland routes in long-distance and transit truck services. The meetings of the CER Management Committee and General Assembly took place at TRAKO, which made it possible for the heads of many European railways to take part in the Fair. The CER Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies is one of the largest European railway organisations, with 72 members to date. For the fourth time TRAKO will be accompanied by a charity auction for the Children's Ward of Rev E. Dutkiewicz Hospice in Gdańsk. This year, thanks to the generosity of the donors, i.e. the PKP S.A. Group, MEDCOM, BOMBARDIER and SIEMENS, the Hospice received a telephone switchboard. This year’s TRAKO FOR THE CHILDREN included the Train of the Future art competition for primary and secondary school students! An additional PLN 6,500 was gathered during the auction of the winning works. TRAKO 2009 also featured The World of Small Railway – railway model exhibition and Polish Railway Model Championships, organised in partnership with the Polish Association of Railway Modellers and Railway Lovers. The event complements the fair’s agenda with an important element of popularising railway not only among professionals. The mock-ups, dioramas and models (not only those entered in the Championship contest) present a very high level of both factual detail and workmanship. The best products and technologies presented at TRAKO were assessed and received awards in the Ernest Malinowski Competition and in the Czesław Jaworski Competition organised by SITK RP. The awards were presented at the TRAKO Gala in the beautiful interior of Frederic Chopin Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk.
