THE GRAND PRIZE sponsored by the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk - 10.000 PLN   MONIKA REPTOWSKA, Poland In the opinion of the jury this entry best met the competition requirements. It is the best entry because it has two levels of appreciation. First it uses one of the iconographic images of pop art: the smile. On another level it can also be seen as a critical position towards pop art because it keeps you smiling even if you are not feeling happy. What is more, by making you smile, it prevents you from talking. If you combine these two levels, then you can find the usability of the piece transcending mere decoration. The artist has made a very clear statement; at first glance the viewer can see the artist’s point.

The Amber Personality of the Year 2008

dr REGINA KRAMARSKA The Committee emphasised that Dr Kramarska is a person who is uniquely dedicated to efforts in support of the Polish amber industry. In its justification, the Committee emphasised that Dr Kramarska is an experienced geologist and a specialist in amber deposits in Poland and its neighbouring countries. Her work led to a 2008 study on the prospects of utilising Polish amber resources in order to determine the ways the industry can become independent of raw amber supplies from the Russian Federation and the Ukraine in the future.
